چکیده

By quantitatively fitting simple emission line profile models that include both atomic opacity and porosity to the Chandra X-ray spectrum of ζ Pup, we are able to explore the trade-offs between reduced mass-loss rates and wind porosity. We find that reducing the mass-loss rate of ζ Pup by roughly a factor of four, to 1.5× 10 M⊙ yr , enables simple non-porous wind models to provide good fits to the data. If, on the other hand, we take the literature mass-loss rate of 6×10 M⊙ yr , then to produce X-ray line profiles that fit the data, extreme porosity lengths – of h∞ ≈ 3 R∗ – are required. Moreover, these porous models do not provide better fits to the data than the non-porous, low optical depth models. Additionally, such huge porosity lengths do not seem realistic in light of 2-D numerical simulations of the wind instability.

CHANDRA DETECTION OF DOPPLER SHIFTED X-RAY LINE PROFILES FROM THE WIND OF ζ PUPPIS (O4f)

We report on a 67 ks HETG observation of the optically brightest early O-star, ζ Pup (O4 f). Many resolved X-ray lines are seen in the spectra over a wavelength range of 5 to 25 Å. Chandra has sufficient spectral resolution to study the velocity structure of isolated X-ray line profiles, and to distinguish the individual forbidden, intercombination, and resonance (fir) emission lines in several...

Chandra X-ray Grating Spectrometry of Η Carinae near X-ray Minimum: I. Variability of the Sulfur and Silicon Emission Lines

We report on variations in important X-ray emission lines in a series of Chandra grating spectra of the supermassive colliding wind binary star η Car, including key phases around the X-ray minimum/periastron passage in 2003.5. The X-rays arise from the collision of the slow, dense wind of η Car with the fast, low-density wind of an otherwise hidden companion star. The X-ray emission lines provi...

X-ray Emission Line Profile Modeling of O stars: Fitting a Spherically-Symmetric Analytic Wind-Shock Model to the Chandra Spectrum of ζ Puppis

X-ray emission line profiles provide the most direct insight into the dynamics and spatial distribution of the hot, X-ray-emitting plasma above the surfaces of OB stars. The O supergiant ζ Puppis shows broad, blueshifted, and asymmetric line profiles, generally consistent with the wind-shock picture. We model the profiles of eight lines in the Chandra HETGS spectrum of this prototypical hot sta...

The X-ray View of OB Star Wind Structure and Dynamics

High-resolution X-ray grating spectroscopy enables us to measure the kinematics and spatial distribution of the shock-heated wind plasma in O and early B stars, testing the predictions of the embedded wind shock scenario of massive star Xray production. By fitting models to the resolved, Doppler broadened X-ray emission line profiles measured by the Chandra X-ray Observatory’s grating spectrome...

Modeling O-Star X-Ray Emission-Line Profiles

X-ray emission from hot (Oand B-type) stars is a long-standing astrophysical puzzle. High-resolution x-ray spectroscopy of hot stars resolves emission line profile shapes, offering direct insight into the dynamics and spatial distribution of the x-ray-emitting plasma. The O supergiant ζ Puppis shows broad, blueshifted, and asymmetric line profiles, generally consistent with the wind-shock pictu...
